Fashion Month for Dummies: Your Official Guide

It's here! It's here! It's finally here! As Candy Pratts Price said in The September Issue, one of my favorite movies to date, "September is the January of fashion." This statement could not be any more accurate. During the entire month the fashion industry introduces brand new collections to the public that not only change their closets, but also their attitudes. As designers prepare to unveil the spring and summer collections for next year, fashion people across the globe wait anxiously to see what trends will take the runways by storm.

Even if you don't obsess over the whole ordeal in the same way I do, I am certain that you can appreciate a healthy dose of runway walks. Embrace it, make Tyra Banks proud. The energy that is present during a runway show is palpable, even when you're just live streaming it from your laptop like I have done year after year in between homework assignments.  I am fascinated by these ornate runway shows each of which provide an aesthetic specific to the designer's signature appeal. The anticipation builds and builds in the weeks leading up to New York Fashion Week as everyone in the industry bustles about trying to schedule, organize and prepare for the month to begin.

From New York to London to Milan to Paris, each city offers an atmosphere unlike the other with designers and brands both old and new showing their very best fashion for the duration of one week. It's electrifying to watch the heavy hitters like Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Phoebe Philo for Céline, but it's equally intriguing to see what new talent offers like Simone Porte Jacquemus for Jacquemus or Scott Studenberg and John Targen for Baja East. There is an infinite list of talented and creative minds in the fashion industry and it's gratifying to see them take the global spotlight for an entire month.
