(Sicker Than Your Average) NYFW Recap

The Fashion Speak Takes New York Fashion Week

I know, I know. Every single fashion publication is flooding your timeline with a recap of the top fashion shows, best street style looks and hottest new collections. I'm here to give you the rundown of everything I saw but in a super honest and non-sponsored version. Let me begin by filling you in on exactly how at age nineteen I was able to work as a PR assistant during New York Fashion Week. In March of this year I attended Fashion PR Confidential in Manhattan where I met Danika Daly and Crosby Noricks, the founders of this 2-day workshop dedicated to teaching young professionals about the world of Fashion PR. Since growing close to the alumni of Fashion PR Con and keeping in touch with both Danika and Crosby, my network greatly expanded far beyond what it was prior to attending the workshop. Many weeks before fashion month began, I reached out to every connection I made in New York and offered to help on any NYFW projects that needed an extra set of hands. I was pleased when Danika said she had a few things going on that I could help with. After a solid week of super late nights preparing my looks for the week, getting ahead on my school work and packing what felt like my entire life into a super tiny suitcase, I headed to the promise land.

"This is my niche, this is what I am meant to do"

When I arrived in New York I immediately felt at home. "This is my niche, this is what I am meant to do," I thought as I admired the gleaming skyline from the back window of my cab that was driving over the Queensboro Bridge on the way to Sweatleaf Brooklyn for my first meeting to discuss Fashion Week duties. The energy in the city was even more electrifying than usual and I was tremendously inspired by every single thing I saw. This inspiration was put to use when I began working on my assignments of the week which included planning a seating chart for a fashion show, organizing material and content for a photoshoot, and then assisting with the production of a runway show.  Fashion Public Relations was in full swing and I was totally in my element as I combined my love of fashion with my love of writing, organizing and styling. When I wasn't buried beneath a pile of clothes and planners I was in full-fledged frolic mode as I explored a different part of New York all by myself each day. Bliss. I shopped and shopped and then I even shopped some more, for good measure. I wasn't alone in my endeavors, the streets were full of fashion lovers old and young wandering about trying to get a glimpse of the season's best looks. It seemed as if the entire city united for the sake of fashion as the entire world watched via livestream.

Let it be known that fashion week is much more than Gucci loafers and Chloé bags. No matter what a person's role is, chances are he or she is working late nights and early morning to assure everything is as it should be for an event, a presentation or a show. The fashion industry fascinated me long before I ever dreamed I would be able to make it my career. Being in New York having an assigned position for fashion week made me feel unstoppable. One of the things that intrigues me the most about fashion is that no matter how many crazy hours of the day I work, I am always rewarded by the fun that comes along with this world of constant change. In addition to working on the many fashion week shows for Danika Daly PR, I was also in charge of the PR Couture Instagram for two whole days! See what I mean by fun? I was so happy when one of my favorite websites, PR Couture asked me to document a behind-the-scenes exclusive look at my daily life as a PR girl during NYFW. Little things like this make me realize how fortunate I am to be in a position to do what I love.

NYFW was all about pushing the boundaries further than they have ever been pushed before.  From the striking hair and makeup looks seen on the runway to powerful and moving shows such as Givenchy, the feeling of being in the center of a global phenomenon was incredible. If you thought for one moment that Fashion Week was only about pin-thin models working a runway, think again. There are so many moving parts to each and every event that goes on and everything is highly orchestrated. The influence that Fashion Month has on pop-culture is undeniable. From art to film, the fashion industry has a tremendous say in what is important. Since returning from NYFW I have felt brand new and ready for absolutely anything. A schedule so tight I forget to eat proper food? Sure. A night so late I contemplate if it is really even worth going to bed? No problem. No matter what is going on each day, I feel beyond confident in every move I make. That's what fashion does.

I will continue to share my favorite highlights from NYFW in between my 15-credit hour class schedule, my two executive board positions and my internship, but until my next post be sure to check out all of my photos on PR Couture and my own Instagram which can be found here.
