When searching for an outfit to wear to a wedding, keep your options open and exhaust every resource to find the perfect dress at the perfect price. Just because you're a guest doesn't mean you shouldn't put serious effort into your appearance.
A good place to start the dress hunt is Rent The Runway. I have used this site for similar occasions and it is perfect if you want a nice dress but you know you won't wear it again. Not only can you rent designer dresses from names like Marchesa and Zac Posen but you can also rent jewelry, coats and bags to complete your outfit.
My biggest piece of advice for choosing a wedding outfit is to stick to the colors you know and love. Wear black all the time? Go with a black cocktail dress. Is red your signature color? Wear a red dress with minimal details to leave your mark without standing out too much (e.g. no sequins or feathers).
It's not difficult to find an outfit when you make your personal style a priority in the shopping process. Don't spend money on a dress you don't absolutely love just because you feel obligated or because you feel like you won't find another one - you will. My final tip is to throw away the idea of "upstaging the bride" because I can assure you the attention will be on her, not to worry.
With these ideas in mind, I have selected my top outfit inspirations for you to shop before your next fall/winter wedding:
